Where can I get speakers for a 1980 Corvette?
Filed Under corvette | 5 Comments
I have a 1980 Corvette. It had blown speakers so I took it to the Mobile Audio in town. The front dash speakers changed out just fine for something comparable. The rear speakers have proven difficult.
Mobile Audio told me that there aren’t any companies that make speakers to fit old Corvettes - the magnets are too long. Right now I have the speakers in boxes in the back.
I’m thinking about just taking them out and leaving the rear speakers empty. Someone told me if it is done right, I would really only need the front speakers anyway.
Any thoughts? Where I can get speakers that will fit, or how to run the sound system to utilize just the front two and still get good sound?
I have a Pioneer deck installed, no sub or amp.
Proud-
Apparently you have never dealt with an old car… “AN” auto shop is the most generic answer you could have given. Don’t you think that in fixing up my old car that I would have thought of that? The car is 28 years old! They don’t just have parts for cars that old sitting on the shelf at the auto shop.
I’ve checked ebay, but haven’t found anything that will fit. The magnets on the old speakers are a good 1 to 2 inches shorter than what is the norm. So when you try to put in the new style speakers they stick out too far and you can’t put the speaker covers back on.
Please don’t answer unless you actually have something helpful to say.
I’m not a moron. I’m asking for someone to tell me where they got theirs so I can do the same.

Lamborghini Sports Cars - Automotive Legends Both in Styling and Vehicle Performance
Filed Under corvette | Comments Off
For the legendary Lamborghini sports car stable of fantastic ultra high performance and styled vehicles it all started with ordinary Fiat automobiles and tractors.
Mr. Lamborghini - fully named - Mr. Ferruccio Lamborghini got his start with Fiats and then went on to a large successful manufacturing concern that grew from a small manufacturing shop into a major producer of tractors. However at a certain point in every person’s life they search out to complete what their real passion is. In the case of Lamborghini was finely styled and crafted motor cars. At 60 years of age, an established manufacturer of agricultural tractors - Mr. Lamborghini - decided that he could a better job of building a high end, beautifully styled, performance racing automobiles than either of the two dominant Italian auto firms of that auto industry sector - Ferrari and Maserati.
The first product out of the door had a chassis that was multi-tubular; the engine was front mounted sporting a 3.5 liter 12 cylinder V-12 engine. The V-12 engine itself was fitted with six Weber carburetors and ran four overhead camshafts. It all clocked at 360 ultra smooth horsepower with the transmission drive being through five speed stick shift. Suspension involved a coil and wishbone independent suspension set up. In one word it was wow - both in terms of performance of the hop as well as the automotive styling.
Although the styling of those early Lamborghini models may be considered standard Italian sports car design - designs which have worked their way into the so called standard “sport scar designs “and “sport scar flair”, at the time it was new and innovative and for the most part if was twenty five years ahead of anything produced in the good old U.S.A. . The one American sports car which might be considered an exception to that point was the Chevrolet Corvette. For years to come nothing else really matched or was similar to the clean aerodynamic lines and styling of the early Lamborghini classic autos.
Even then Lamborghini had such innovative products the establishment and reputation of the Lamborghini product line was no easy road to hoe. Although the first cars were produced in 1963 it was not for two years later - at the Turin Motor Show that the car began to attract solid interest and for the reputation of the car and its studio to grow and begin to become accepted for what it should be.
The first real product of record for Lamborghini was what was marketed as Miura T 400 model automobile. Its first year of manufacture was the 1966 model year. The basic layout and design of the Miura T 400 was a mid-engined coupe with a slightly larger version of the overhead cam engine - the classic V-12 laid out transversely behind the two seats of the car. The rear wheels were then driven by this engine through” spurs gears”. Interestingly the gear boxes and rear axles were Lamborghini products all by themselves -so they shared a lineage that was unique and not the same as any other of the competitor’s models.
What was performance of this little cat? The V-12 engine could pour out a total of 385 barrel horsepower. Top speed of this little coupe was over 180 miles per hour. It could more than carry its weight with the local Italian contenders - even the famed Ferraris.
If the was one complaint from drivers or riders it was of noise levels in the car’s cockpit. It can be said that this was the price to be paid for success or in this case speed and performance. If you cannot stand the heat don’t stay in the kitchen. Certainly the buyers of Lamborghini fine motor cars who bought the product and established the revered name for its performance and advanced styling and forgo this small shortcoming or foible as the car as an assumed fact - even a luxury.
The next model in the Lamborghini stable was introduced approximately two years later. The entire life of the production run of the popular Miura model was nine years - with two cars being produced a week ( a production figure of only 100 or so cars a year). The name of this vehicle was the Espada. For the new Lamborghini model, the Espada, Lamborghini went back to a more standard front engine layout. Perhaps this was in response to concerns over noise levels in the cockpit of the Miura and the need to produce a more “standard” or “civilized “vehicle product. No one really knows what went on in the mind of the genius Ferruccio Lamborghini. However what was retained for sure were the Lamborghini basics - the four liter V-12 massive highly tuned engine with whizzy overhead cams and multiple choke carburetors all putting out massive automotive performance and handling.
In the end it can be said that the Lamborghini automotive and automotive styling and performance legends are more than unique and reek of power, thrust and acceleration.

Corvettes Memories Are a Blast From the Past
Filed Under corvette | Comments Off
It was made a legend in songs and performance. The Chevrolet Corvette was lovingly known just as the “Vette”. The Vette was and still is a high speed performance car. It started out a a little sports car and now is grown up to a relatively large sports car. The earlier ones were made out of fiberglass. Come to think of it, the light weight would help save gas today. Unfortunately, the fiberglass didn’t offer much protection and you could easily punch a hole in it. The 1967 Stingray was born were an engine that taught you what it was like to pull G’s while still on the ground.
Factory Hot Rods became real in October of 1963, when the GTO was born. At this time, the Corvette began to grow in size and weight. It was truly becoming an American hot rod/sports car with looks to kill and performance to match. The Vette came in the 409 engine and then later move up to large horsepower engines. These powerhouses package included a 400-horsepower V8 with dual exhausts, a Carter AFB four-barrel carburetor, a mild hydraulic camshaft, and the kind of whip lashing neck pain street-grabbing torque that left a smile on your face. Other standard features included a manual three-speed transmission with a Hurst shifter (in those days the Hurst shifter was not only very good but also very cool), a heavy-duty clutch (very much needed), heavy-duty suspension, US Royal red-line tires, a 3.23:1 rear axle ratio, and the famous Corvette emblem. The Vette emblem itself was just as famous as the car and was easily recognized.
What Made The Chevy Vette So Coveted? Some things you never forget such as my 1967 Stingray and Jan & Dean Dead Man’s Curve. It was a good thing it had a windshield because I would have had bugs stuck to my teeth from grinning so much. The thrill of standing still, shifting into first gear, revving up that sweet engine and letting out the clutch and being plastered to the back of the seat was pure adrenaline pumping. That was my first experience of “pulling G’s”. Last time I felt that type of adrenaline rush was during chopper auto-rotations in Nam. That was 40 years ago and I still love my Vette. Maybe it is the legend. Maybe we have gotten the legend mixed up with reality. All I know is I can’t help but smile when I remember my little Vette.
It is hard to explain to my children why it was so special. I owned a 1955 Ford though it was pretty it just didn’t have the appeal of the legendary Corvette. The royal blue was my favorite. I have a friend whose color was plum. Can you remember vinyl seats? I can! They were cool looking and very hot functionally. I remember leaving my skin on the seat many times getting out that car. Getting in the summer meant either cooking your legs or trying to keep a towel in the car to sit on. Once you started up that 409, you were transported to another world. The purr of that engine, the feel of the Hurst shifter and watching the gas needle drop was worth all the pain of sitting on a hot seat. What hot seat? Oh yeah, 4 mpg! It was a good thing gasoline was only 15 cents a gallon back then.

Sourcing Parts At Reasonable Prices For Your Classic Corvette
Filed Under corvette | Comments Off
With any classic vehicle finding a source of auto repair parts can be a major concern. So it is with classic Chevrolet Corvette as well as Chevrolet Stingray autos.
Corvettes have always had distinctive wheel covers and are a refreshing change from slotted mag wheels. The wood steering wheels add a rich touch if you are lucky to ever find one.
Interest has been spread into the 1968 and later models, especially car equipped with the lift out roof panels. In these cars, the excellent General Motors (G.M.) Turbo Hydra-matic transmission was the desired feature. Indeed one of the most valuable vehicle of this group has been the 1970 LT-1 350. Chevrolet itself had offered some good gymkhana suspension parts for this group of cars that are relatively inexpensive and greatly improve handling qualities.
Where can you find used parts for your classic Corvette? First of course are local swap meet and car clubs in your area. If you can shop close to home better be it.
You actually hold and fondle the part, inspecting it yourself. Why have to arrange and pay shipping charges. As well you may make valuable contacts for your Corvette restoration projects. Often one local contact will lead to another good source for parts as well as classic car restoration expertise.
Next on the list are magazines - such as - Corvette Enthusiast, Vette and Corvette Fever. It might be said that Corvette websites on the internet might be next on your list. However the actual magazines may provide a source for you first. Why not whittle down your Corvette resource list first rather than searching through the websites that may or may not have stock and be of the stature they claim. Websites can be made and put up easily. Magazines articles usually have current sourced lists; will place the vendors in some ranking. If there are ads - those ads have to paid for - which is an indication of the solvency and current resources of the firms involved. As well you may get additional good tips form the articles in the magazine. Classic car magazines such as Hemmings are also very useful.
Next for resources are actual websites devoted to this passion. The sites can be Corvette specific - such as vetteweb, the general motors website itself, The Corvette Club of America etc. Google the term “Corvette Links”, “Chevrolet Corvette Links” or “Stingray Links”. One link will always lead to more and additional links. Corvette enthusiasts are like that - always trying to be helpful and to share.
A terrific resource always is eBay. EBay is the premier online auction site. It can easily be found on the web at its home of ebay.com as well as various worldwide specific sites - whether they be ebay.ca in Canada or ebay.uk in the United Kingdom. EBay has both its original sales areas as well as the more specific and distinct eBay motors. The beauty of eBay is that somewhere in the world someone may have exactly the part, component or technical manuals that you are looking for.
In essence it may be “just lying around” and be of found money to them and yet be exactly what you require. It may be that that item is not available in your local area or the locals may want a killing for it. Either way eBay can be a very useful resource. Some of the items on eBay are on an auction basis; some are on a “buy now” price. Some are both. The beauty of eBay is that it has advanced features which may make your search for that exact hard to find Corvette car part easier. You can conduct product searches on eBay easily and specifically. If you are an eBay member (no cost to register), then you can have the eBay system email you the moment someone lists that part. Then you can either bid on the item, or if it is a buy now you can choose to purchase it. In addition eBay has a buyer request area where you can put out feelers and a request if anyone has that part or knows of contacts or leads that have that component available. Remember though with eBay that shipping costs are major component of the final and real cost of any good purchased. All that matters, if evaluating cost, is what the product costs when it arrives at the door of your shop.
Lastly never forget your local or area Chevrolet dealer themselves. There is both an amazing and remarkable amount of early Corvette parts still in the parts inventory of some Chevrolet dealers as well as some General Motors Chevrolet dealers who specialize in classic Corvette and Corvette Stingray car, mechanical as well as body parts.
Rodney
