Michael J Lee asked:

Classic Car Hire is for that special occasion such as a wedding or a celebration of all kinds. Classic cars are truly at the top of the market with luxury and sophistication as standard. Classic cars were first manufactured before world war two. Many of the post war models are now collector’s items, not only as show pieces but also investments.

Classic cars became more popular after 1945, in that year the launch of the MG TB which was the classic sports car which everybody wanted. It was in America that this car had its biggest impact. It started a craze for British sports cars this craze lasted for around 35 years.

Classic cars also include the great classic Porsche introduced in 1948 and was still in production until 1965 with many different manufacturers over the years. Classic cars were mainly manufactured in Italy by Enzo Farraiti, they had a V 12 engines with a five speed gearbox, and these cars could reach 120 mph easily, it was the ultimate racing car of the time. Classic cars and sports car took the world by storm with the British Jaguar Mark V11.

One of the cars which could surpass the Jaguar in terms of performance and comfort was the Bentley Continental which costs four times much as the Jaguar.

Classic cars were manufactured by two rival firms, these were Austin Healy and Triumph, these made the smaller and cheaper classic cars.

Classic Cars were very popular in the sixties, the Silver Shadow and the Rolls Royce. In the seventies they introduced the elegant Corniche convertible which was based on the Silver Shadow.

Classic Cars soon followed with Jaguars X J 12 saloon, this car was voted best car in the world by a panel of judges appointed by a car magazine. The only problem with the X J 12 was its thirst for fuel, it became more serious with the worlds first fuel crisis in 1973.

Classic cars continued to improve with Lamborghini bringing out it’s greatest car; the fantastic Countach, an equally stunning car is the Lagonda which is made by Aston Martin, which is one of today’s most attractive classic cars. Lagondas could not be produced in large numbers as they are very expensive to buy and make.

Classic cars are avalible to hire in a variety of models, colours and types.

Classic Cars were also being made in America. Chevrolet introduced a corvette in 1953, Ford then built the Thunderbird, which was more like a convertible than a classic car it could reach 113 mph.

The Ford Mustang made a big impact on the car industry by selling half a million cars in the first 18 months when it was launched in 1964, because of its high performance and low price.

Classic cars were also built by the Japanese who in 1970 launched the Daston 240 Z which sold very well in America, because of their high performance, cheap price and reliability. It is extremely easy to hire a classic car.

Dodge Magnum RT 2006 Car Review

Filed Under corvette | Comments Off

corvette
Tim Summers asked:

The new Magnum is a great looking automobile that may get your neighbors speaking as you rumble around the block. The unique styling of the Magnum will also attract gawkers in the shape of 18-22 years old guys pointing for their friends to “check that out”. And a few people will approach you as you are filling up the gas tank to ask, “Does it actually have a Hemi?”, with only an obscure idea that it somehow makes the car better.

The Magnum is offered with many different engine sizes (either a 6-cylinder or 8-cylinder) with your selection of hp output of 190, 250, 340 and 425. The cost of the car also corresponds with the engine size starting at $30,345 to the expensive STR-8 model for $37,320. A giant part of the mystique around this auto is the Hemi engine. The Hemi is short for hemispherical combustion chamber, which creates better fuel burning and allows bigger valves for better airflow. Fundamentally , it produces more power than an engine with its displacement would usually produce. ( there also are downsides to the Hemi, explaining why it isn’t the only engine that Chrysler produces).

The interior of the vehicle looks much more costly than you’d be expecting for the cost of the Magnum. Since Mercedes bought Chrysler, the Dodge autos I have sampled had a sharp improvement in interior quality. While on the road, the car is really solid and the seats are comfy even on long highway runs.

As much as I like the looks, after driving it a bit I have to ask the design concept that the Magnum offers. It is a station wagon built to move plenty of people and lots of stuff. But mating this with a tough engine with the taught racing-like suspension is uncomfortable for both. It is like having a Corvette tow a small trailer, and you are in the trailer and the Corvette driver is 15 years-old, pushing the auto to its limits. (Only an actual Corvette has a much more cosy suspension than the Magnum). Even driving on smooth roads, the steering is extraordinarily darty and tough to control. And with a huge vehicle, all that weaving and road feedback is exaggerated for the passengers and everything you have stored in the back.

I like having a navigation system, but figuring out ways to use it with the wheel controls made me often refer to the user’s manual. Regardless of the high h.p. and low-end torque I played with when starting from a full stop, the RT model I drove averaged twenty Miles per gallon on the higway.

What I presume to be the target audience for this automobile, those 18-22 year old men that I mentioned, will likely love this automobile. And as much as I like driving sports cars, the darty steering and sharp suspension make it too uncomfortable without any impressive payoff. The 0-60 sprint is fun for a little while, but I’d pass on buying a Magnum as a daily driving vehicle.

The Fast Modernization of Sports Cars

Filed Under corvette | Comments Off

Uchenna Ani-Okoye asked:

Modernization of sports cars has been unstoppable. The concept of the sports car generated by Enzo Ferrari’s in 1929 was the beginning of the sports car industry. He was the one that lead the way for other car manufacturers to follow the design of the Ferrari sports car.

The great designs of the Ferrari are well known for their car racing success and the Ferrari is the most extravagant and successful racing team in the history of Formula One racing. Ferrari has produced cars that have fascinated the world with their versions of the sports car and have promoted drivers like Michael Schumacher and Alberto Ascari in the world-wide sport of car racing.

The F430 is the flagship of Ferrari. This sports car is a muscular two-seat coupe, which was reengineered last year. It has became the most sought after car this year because of its great performance and affordable price of $161,000 which is considerably lower in price then most cars in its class.

The most current release of the Ferrari is the Superamerica hardtop convertible, which is priced $300,000. It became the hottest seller when it was displayed in all showrooms of the Ferrari in the United States. It has an awesome yet powerful V-12 engine and the design of the transmission came from the F-1 version. The standard package on all models of the Ferrari contains transmission paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

The roof of the Superamerica makes it an awesome display of engineering and imaginative design. The roof is made from electro chromic glass and carbon fiber. The driver can change the setting of the car from the elegant coupe to a more exotic open-air sports car.

Because of the fast modernization of Ferrari versions, the company has acquired ownership of the Maserati in 1997 - a long time competitor in the production of sports cars. Since then, it has boosted the sales of Maserati and modernized the production facilities of the company. It also started producing new models like the Quattroporte hardtop, which is priced at $95,000 and the Spyder GT convertible that is priced at $83,000.

Ferrari is considered the super performance car. It made its mark on the sports car industry because of the extraordinary designs and modified engineering of their sports cars. There are also other car manufacturers that are still making names for themselves in the sports car industry. The Chevrolet Corvette and the Dodge Viper are also awesome in their designs. The Porsche Carr era can be compared to the Ferrari with its power and is even more expensive at $440,000.

An Introduction To NASCAR

Filed Under corvette | Comments Off

corvette racing
Gen Wright asked:

an extremely popular racing event in the United States and it is becoming more so every single day. However, if you are new to the entire scene, things can no doubt be a little confusing. This article is meant to sort all that out and set you on the path to becoming a true NASCAR fan. So let’s start with what NASCAR actually stands for and where it came from.

A person called Billy France Sr. founded the NASCAR on 21st February 1948. NASCAR stands for “National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing”. As you can guess from the acronym, the races were meant to be between ’stock’ cars. Stock cars are cars that have been built for general purpose driving and definitely not for racing. To give you a better idea - when you are buying a standard car from an auto showroom you are buying a stock car. However, if you have seen at least one NASCAR race or even seen the photos you will know that the cars that participate in the races now are anything but stock cars. These cars have been built from the ground up to be speed monsters. These cars are built for high speed races.

Not all cars can qualify for the races either. The cars need to have a standard American made four-door form factor. They also must have fenders. This is very important because it allows cars to have side-by-side contact without their wheels locking up and wrecking the cars.

There are highly specific requirements that NASCAR cars must meet. The specifications need a NASCAR car to weigh in at 3,400 pounds. A NASCAR car needs to have a wheelbase of exactly 110 inches. The engine should be 358 cubic inch V8.

So you will not see those specially built pointy-nosed cars that run on formula-one races. Think of it as a throwback from the stock cars era and what differentiates NASCAR from other races.

Current eligible cars include the Dodge Charger, the Toyota Camry and the Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Just to put things into perspective - a NASCAR car can generate over 750 horsepower in comparison to a showroom stock Chevy Corvette that can generate only 400 horsepower with its V8 engine.

The NASCAR committee oversees the many NASCAR races that take place throughout the country. But you can start by looking at the top three races to begin with: -

1. Sprint Cup Series

2. Nationwide Series

3. Craftsman Truck Series

To make things even simpler, just remember that if people are simply referring to the ‘NASCAR’ they are probably talking about the Sprint Cup Series. That is because it is by far the most popular series in the country. And the most popular race of this series is most definitely the Daytona 500. This race is so famous that it has numerous mentions in pop culture like in movies and stories. The NASCAR itself has many pop culture references and it also has a video game based on it, which regularly releases a new version.

Like fans of other spectator sports, Nascar fans love to show their enthusiasm for the sport by proudly wearing the Nascar logo on their shirts and hats.

Paddy Cummins asked:

In 1939, Lieutenant-Commander George Ericson, having served in the Merchant Navy, was recruited to the Royal Navy to take command of the corvette, ‘Compass Rose’ for a war mission of enormous importance. His officers, also new to the Navy, were totally inexperienced in the highly dangerous, but crucial task assigned to them: escorting convoys of British merchant ships, carrying vital supplies to Britian, from Canada and the USA.

Despite their shortcomings, the ‘Compass Rose’ and her crew embraced the hazardous mission with courage and confidence, crossing the Atlantic many times, often in atrocious weather, avoiding the deadly German U-boats and protecting the vital supplies for their besieged homeland.

It certainly wasn’t all plain sailing and Monsarrat graphically describes the disastrous bombing of many merchant ships with their tragic civilian crews blasted to the depths of the Atlantic.

After three harrowing years of bravery and service, which included the sinking of one U-boat, the ‘Compass Rose’ was herself torpedoed and her crew forced to abandon ship. Commander Ericson, along with his First Lieutenant, Lockart. survived, but sadly most of his crew were lost.

He took command of a new ship, ‘HMS Saltash Castle’, continued to escort the convoys, eventually sinking one German submarine, and forcing the surrender of others.

‘The Cruel Sea’ is a powerful novel, graphically portraying the ‘Fire of Hell’ that was the North Atlantic during World War 11. It describes vividly, the heroic exploits of Commander Ericson and his brave crew aboard the ‘Compass Rose’ and ‘Saltash Castle’, and their desperate ‘cat-and-mouse’ game with Nazi U-boats.

Monsarrat managed expertly to put a human face on war, bringing his crew to life; their strengths, courage and characters are portrayed in a brilliantly effective way. The book charts the entire service life of the ‘Compass Rose’, her struggle to overcome limited armory, her inexperienced crew and her shortcomings in the face of deadly, lurking U-boats. These limitations were eventually exposed by a powerful, well-equiped enemy, with disastrous consequences for most of her brave crew.

A gripping drama, depicting unique heights of human courage and commitment in a  ‘life and death’ devastating war environment.

THE AUTHOR.

Nicholas Monsarrat was born in Liverpool in 1910. Son of a distinguished surgeon, he graduated in law. Not keen to pursue a legal career, he began writing in London, but through his early reviews and journalistic efforts, he barely got by.

Although against war, he joined the Royal Navy Voluntary Reserve “to help his country win the battle” Recruited to command a corvette, he proceeded to give distinguished service escorting convoys of merchant ships through the Atlantic, bringing vital supplies to Britain.

It was a highly dangerous mission for an inexperienced Commander and crew, but although exposed to daily ‘life and death’ perils, he completed his task, highly commended by the Royal Navy.

Following the war in 1946, he joined the British diplomatic service, becoming an information officer in Johannesburg. It was in South Africa that he wrote his masterpiece, ‘The Cruel Sea’. which immediately propelled him to fame and fortune. The story was filmed in 1953, the year Monsarrat was transferred to Ottawa in Canada as a British Information Officer. There he wrote two books: ‘The Story of Esther Costello’ (1953 and ‘The Tribe That Lost its Head’ (1956).

Nicholas Monsarrat left the diplomatic service in 1959 to write full-time. In all, he published twenty-eight books, many bestsellers, including two volumes of his autobiography: ‘Life is a Four Letter Word.’

He and his wife, Ann, retired to the peaceful Maltese Island of Gozo, lived in a charming house in the quaint little village of San Lawrenz, enjoying the magnificent views, and the exquisite beauty of the blue Mediterranean. It was there that he wrote his widely acclaimed novel ‘The Kappillan of Malta’, a vivid portrayal of Malta’s sufferings and legendary resistance during World War 11.

But it was ‘The Cruel Sea’ that proved his literary genius, winning for him the ‘Heinemann Foundation Prize for Literature’ and ensuring his legacy as a giant of the sea…and the pen.

He passed away in 1979, and in deference to his wishes, he was buried at sea with full Military Honours from a ship of the Royal Navy.

…………………………………..

‘THE CRYING SEA’ , just published, is another ‘Epic Sea Book’. It is inspired by a true sea tragedy that occurred off Malta in 2008. ‘A fishing boat explodes in a raging inferno and sinks to the depths of the Mediterranean. So begins six days and nights of unspeakable anguish for the crew and their families; shock, horror and grief for the whole island of Malta’.

Jo Alexander asked:

The Corvette ZR1 is a high performance version of the already very powerful standard Corvette. However with improved suspension components and a test program that tuned the handling on some of the most demanding roads and tracks, General Motors hope that their new flagship car will now have the agility and poise to take on the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo.

On of the major differences of the ZR1 against the standard Corvette are the efforts that General Motors have undertaken to save weight. Instead of using conventional steel components the ZR1 utilises an all aluminium under structure, whilst the bonnet, front wings, inner wheel arches and roof are all made out of carbon fibre.

In order to hone the handling of the ZR1, General Motors asked Delphi to further enhance the MagneRide suspension control system, which offers significant improvements over previous generations, and increases the difference between the touring and Sport modes. GM also tested the ZR1 on its brand new handling and testing track in Detroit. This proving ground replicates the demanding corners, crests and swoops of some of the world’s finest race tracks includong the Nurburgring’s legendary Karussell.

When it comes to the engine, the Corvette ZR1 uses a mighty 6.2 litre V8 engine, which is boosted by a twin rotor Eaton supercharger that runs at 0.72 bar of boost, and enables the engine to produce 638 bhp and 604 lb ft of torque. This is considerably more powerful than the standard 430 bhp Vette and allows the ZR1 to reach 60 in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph.

The centre of the bonnet houses a scratch proof, heat resistant and UV shielded polycarbonate window that allows you to clearly see the top cover of the intercooler. This will certainly mean that the ZR1 will stand out from lesser powered models. At the front a single air intake splits the xenon headlights, whilst a deep front spoiler hides further intakes and a carbon fibre splitter.

In producing the ZR1 General Motors have pushed the performance envelope of the Corvette even further and produced a car that is faster and handles considerably better than the standard 430 bhp version. However whilst there is no doubting the pace and ability of the ZR1, by the time it reaches the UK it will cost slightly more than a brand new Porsche 911 Turbo and when it comes to decision time, the Porsche will still be the more popular choice.

Little Red Corvette

Filed Under corvette | Comments Off

Brenda Williams asked:

Deemed as the bona fide backseat make out song of Prince’s 1983 album titled 1999, Little Red Corvette combines Prince’s sultry lyrics filled with innuendos with synth-saturated click track rhythms to make one flirty little number.

Although prior to this song, Prince was known for his blatantly sexual lyrics mixed with a raw and funkier sound, which resulted in most of his earlier recording not getting any radio play. This song was just obscure enough to not have offended anybody thus resulting in radio play.

In the song, Prince narrates a one-night stand with a beautiful but promiscuous woman, metaphorically named “Little Red Corvette,” throughout the song he claims to enjoy the experience but urges her to slow down, find a love that is going to last before she destroys herself. The exact nature of the song is left to the imagination being that Prince is never quite clear as to whether he is talking about a car or some red hot minx. In addition to “Little Red Corvette,” Prince uses several other automobile metaphors, including comparing their interlude to riding in a limousine.

It is rumored Prince got the idea for the song while he fell asleep in Lisa Coleman’s Edsel or Mercury Montclair, depending on who you talk to, after an exhausting all-night recording session. Lisa Colman was Prince’s keyboardist for both his 1999 album and Controversy albums and did backing vocals for Little Red Corvette. According to the rumor, the lyrics came to Prince in bits and pieces during that particular catnap and others that followed and eventually he was able to finish it without sleeping.

Little Red Corvette became one of Prince’s best known songs and helped put his name on the music charts. This song was his biggest hit at the time, and the first to reach top ten status in the United States peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, which is the US music industry standard singles popularity chart issued by Billboard magazine. Little Red Corvette was one of his first singles to perform better on the pop chart then the R&B chart, due to the pop/rock format of the song.

The same Little Red Corvette inspired another musician, Stevie Nicks who got the idea for “Stand Back” after hearing Little Red Corvette. She heard Prince’s song in her car, wrote “Stand Back” that night, later called Prince who came into the studio when they recorded the song to play keyboards.

Little Red Corvette is one of those songs that will forever stand the test of time. In 2001, Chevrolet put up billboards with a picture of a red 1963 Corvette Sting Ray that stated, “They don’t write songs about Volvos.” In 2003, Chevrolet used that statement in a commercial that aired for the first time during the Grammys. The ad showed old footage of The Beach Boys performing “My 409″ followed by Don McLean singing “American Pie” (”drove my Chevy to the levee”), and then Prince performing “Little Red Corvette.”

Great Cars I Remember

Pierre Verte asked:

There is no doubt in my mind that a car can be a work of art, and even more so when there is an individual behind it.

Most people identify with men like Enzo Ferrari, W.O. Bentley, Ettore Bugatti - they all started with nothing and stuck passionately to their individual vision. It shows in their work.

The Bugatti is a perfect example. Made by an Italian family of artists and sculptors, the Bugatti cars still take the breath away. Ettore Bugatti received classical art instruction, then taught himself engineering and began building racing cars.

Aesthetics seemed to be as important to him as technology. His cars have boldly styled bodies, and even the engines look like modern sculptures. The Antlantique was designed by his son Jean in 1936, but as it nears age 60 it still looks as futuristic as ever. Jean Bugatti was killed in a car crash and his father lost his business during the war, but their artistic cars remain as their legacy.

The Antlantique is like no shape I’ve ever seen - with rounded contours, and a studded seam along the top, it’s truly a remarkable vision.  On a race track today, it can still do 100 mph without any trouble at all.

Only three of these cars were ever built. One was demolished when it got stuck at a railway crossing. Ralph Lauren, the fashion designer, owns the second and I don’t know where the third one is, if it exists at all. I have only seen pictures of the car, and that was enough to start my heart racing.

When a young man grows up in North America I think it is unusual for him not to be car crazy. I can remember vividly to this day all the cars my father had from the time I was ten years of age. There was a 1940’s Hudson coupe, a 1946 Dodge sedan, a 1949 Mercury, a 1954 Buick Century with the port holes on the side of the hood, and so on…

In those days I would sit with my friends and count the cars that went by. “Look, there goes a Studebaker”; “There’s an Olds”; “There’s a Lincoln”.  Now most cars look alike. If they didn’t have the small individual logos on the trunk I wouldn’t be able to tell a BMW from a Toyota Camry. There are, of course, exceptions, and most of those fall within the sports car world.

I remember fondly my own cars of the past. In the 1950’s it was a Triumph TR3 and in the 1960’s it was a 1963 Stingray Corvette, with the slat in the back window.

There’s nothing like waking up on a nice sunny day, and going for a drive on a country road, and putting a good sports car through its paces.

The pleasure is not about trying to go fast - it’s the feeling of handling a thoroughbred: the way it comes around a corner, the way the mechanism feels when you shift, and, of course, the roar of the engine.

Each of the great cars that I remember from the past had a distinctive character. I can readily call to mind the Alfa Romeo, the little Morgan, the Long-nosed D-type Jaguar, the Porsche 356 Roadster - some of the most beautiful cars in the world.

Now cars are sold at auction just like works of art, and the prices they command are getting higher and higher. As they become expensive antiques I hope all of them don’t get taken off the road. It would be sad to see them all locked up in large storage vaults or glass cases - after all, they were designed to be driven!
